Who Owns Your Website? Domain, Hosting, and Files Explained

Here is an uncomfortable question many business owners cannot answer: do you actually own your website? A surprising number do not — and they only find out when they try to make a change, switch providers, or recover access, and discover everything is locked under someone else's account.

A website is really three separate things, and you should control all of them:

• The domain name (yourbusiness.com). This is your address. It must be registered in your name or your business's name, in an account you control. If your developer registered it under their own account, they technically hold your address — and that is a problem.
• The hosting. This is the space your site lives on. Ideally it is under your account, or at minimum an arrangement where you can get full access and move if you ever need to.
• The website files and content. The actual design, pages, and code. You should receive or have access to these, and ownership should transfer to you once the project is fully paid.

Why this matters: if any of the three is locked under someone else's control, you can become trapped. You may be unable to update your site, forced to keep paying whoever holds it, or — in the worst case — lose your site and domain entirely if that person disappears or you have a falling out. Businesses have lost years of SEO and brand equity this way.

How to protect yourself:

• Register the domain yourself, or insist it is registered in your name and you have the login.
• Ask, before hiring anyone: "Will I own the domain, hosting, and files? Will I have the logins?"
• Get the accounts and access details in writing once the project is complete.
• Be cautious with ultra-cheap "all-in" deals that quietly keep everything under the provider's control.

This is not about distrust — good providers are happy to give you ownership. It is about making sure your most important digital asset is genuinely yours, so you are never held hostage over your own website.
