Website Backups: Why They Matter and How Often

Backups are the unglamorous insurance policy of the web world — easy to ignore until the day they save you. A backup is a saved copy of your website that lets you restore it if something goes wrong. And things do go wrong: hacks, failed updates, server crashes, or simple human error can damage or wipe a site in an instant.

Why backups matter:

• Recovery from disaster. If your site is hacked, breaks, or is accidentally damaged, a recent backup lets you restore it quickly instead of rebuilding from scratch.
• Protection during changes. Updates and edits occasionally break things. A backup taken beforehand means you can roll back instantly.
• Peace of mind. Knowing a clean copy exists turns a potential catastrophe into a minor inconvenience.

Imagine the alternative: your site goes down or gets defaced, and there is no backup. You may lose months or years of work, content, and SEO — and face the cost and time of rebuilding, all while your business is offline. Businesses have genuinely lost their entire web presence this way.

How often should you back up? It depends on how often your site changes:

• A simple site that rarely changes: weekly or monthly backups are usually fine.

A few good practices:

• Automate it. Manual backups get forgotten. Automated backups happen reliably.
• Keep copies off the server. A backup stored only on the same server is useless if that server fails. Off-site or cloud copies are safer.
• Keep more than one. Several recent versions let you go back further if a problem went unnoticed for a while.
• Test restores occasionally. A backup you cannot actually restore is not a backup.
