What to Do When Your Website Goes Down
A website going down costs you customers. What causes it, what to do, and how to prevent it. A practical guide from GBGCoders.
Few things are as stressful as discovering your website is down — especially if customers are the ones who tell you. A site that will not load means lost sales, lost trust, and lost search visibility for as long as it lasts. Here is what to do when it happens, and how to reduce the chances of it happening at all.
First, confirm it is really down. Sometimes the problem is your own connection or browser cache. Try loading the site on another device or network, or use a "is it down?" checking tool. If only you cannot reach it, the fix may be as simple as clearing your cache.
If it is genuinely down, check the common causes:
- Expired domain. If your domain registration lapsed, the site disappears until renewed. This is surprisingly common — and avoidable with auto-renewal.
- Expired or broken SSL. A lapsed security certificate can trigger warnings or block access.
- Hosting issues. Your host may be having an outage, or your plan may have hit a limit. Check your host's status page or contact their support.
- A bad update or change. A recent update, plugin, or edit may have broken the site. Rolling back or restoring a backup often fixes it.
- A hack or attack. Security incidents or traffic floods can take a site offline.
What to do:
- Contact your web partner or host promptly — they can usually diagnose and fix it fastest.
- If you have backups, a recent one can restore a working version quickly.
- Communicate with customers if the downtime is significant — a quick note on social media that you are aware and working on it preserves trust.
How to prevent downtime:
- Enable auto-renewal for your domain and SSL so they never lapse.
- Use reliable hosting and keep your site maintained and updated.
- Keep regular backups so recovery is fast.
- Consider uptime monitoring that alerts you the moment the site goes down, so you find out before your customers do.
The reassuring truth is that most downtime is preventable with good basics, and recoverable quickly when you have backups and a responsive partner.
