App development generally moves through these stages:

• Planning and scope. Defining exactly what the app should do, for whom, and which features are essential versus nice-to-have. This step prevents costly confusion later — a clear scope is half the battle.
• Design. Mapping the screens and how users move through them, then designing the look and feel. Good app design is about making things effortless to use on a small screen.
• Development. The actual building — the part users see (the interface) and the part they do not (the backend that stores data, handles accounts, and powers features). If the app works on both iOS and Android, that is accounted for here.
• Testing. Thorough testing across different phones, screen sizes, and conditions, fixing bugs before release. Apps face far more device variety than websites, so this matters.
• Launch. Submitting to the Apple App Store and Google Play, each with its own review process, guidelines, and developer fees.
• Maintenance. After launch, apps need updates to stay compatible with new phones and operating systems, fix issues, and add improvements. An app is an ongoing relationship, not a one-time delivery.

A few things that surprise first-timers:

• The backend is often the bigger part. Much of the cost and effort is invisible — the server, database, and logic behind the screens.
• Both app stores have rules. Apple in particular reviews apps and can reject ones that do not meet guidelines, which affects timelines.
• Maintenance is not optional. Phones and OS versions change constantly; an unmaintained app eventually breaks.
