On-Page SEO Basics Every Business Owner Should Know
On-page SEO basics in plain English — titles, headings, content and more — so your Philippine business ranks better on Google. By GBGCoders.
On-page SEO sounds technical, but the basics are simple enough for any business owner to understand — and getting them right is half the battle of ranking on Google. "On-page" simply means the things on your own website that you control, as opposed to outside factors like backlinks.
Here are the fundamentals that matter most:
- Page titles. Each page needs a clear, unique title that includes what the page is about and, for local businesses, your area — like "Affordable Web Design in Cavite | GBGCoders." This is one of the strongest on-page signals and what shows as the clickable headline in Google.
- Meta descriptions. The short summary under the title in search results. It does not directly rank you, but a good one earns more clicks.
- Headings. Use a clear main heading (H1) and logical subheadings (H2, H3). They help both readers and Google understand your page structure.
- Useful content. Pages that genuinely answer what searchers want, using the words they actually type, rank better. Thin or vague pages do not.
- Keywords used naturally. Include the terms customers search — your services, your location — but written naturally. Stuffing keywords hurts more than it helps.
- Image basics. Describe images with alt text and use optimized, fast-loading files.
- Internal links. Link between your own pages so visitors and Google can navigate, and so importance flows to key pages.
- Clean URLs. Readable addresses like /web-design-cavite beat messy ones full of random characters.
- Mobile-friendliness and speed. Google ranks fast, mobile-first pages higher — these are on-page essentials now, not extras.
You do not need to obsess over every detail. Getting the titles, headings, useful content, speed, and mobile experience right covers most of the value for a small business.
A common mistake is leaving default or duplicate titles (like "Home" on every page) and writing for search engines instead of people. Write clearly for humans first, with these basics in place, and you are ahead of most local competitors.
On-page SEO is the foundation. It will not do everything alone, but without it, no amount of other effort ranks you well.
