Simple Website Metrics Every Business Owner Should Watch
You do not need to be an analyst to learn from your website data. The few simple metrics that matter for Philippine business owners. By GBGCoders.
Website analytics can feel overwhelming — endless charts and numbers. But you do not need to be a data analyst. A handful of simple metrics tell you most of what matters: whether your site is working and where to improve.
The few worth watching:
- Visitors (traffic). How many people come to your site, and the trend over time. Growing traffic means your visibility is improving; flat or falling traffic is a signal to act.
- Where they come from. Are visitors arriving from Google search, social media, or direct? This tells you which efforts are paying off — for example, rising Google traffic means your SEO is working.
- Top pages. Which pages people actually visit. This shows what they care about, and where to focus your attention.
- Bounce or engagement. Whether people stick around and explore, or leave immediately. Lots of instant exits can mean slow loading, a confusing page, or a mismatch with what they expected.
- Conversions. The most important of all — how many visitors take the action you want (inquiry, call, purchase, form submission). Traffic without conversions means the site is attracting people but not turning them into customers.
- Mobile vs. desktop. Usually most of your visitors are on mobile, which reinforces why the mobile experience must be excellent.
What to do with these:
- If traffic is low, focus on being found — SEO, Google Business Profile, sharing your site.
- If traffic is decent but conversions are low, focus on the site itself — clearer calls to action, trust signals, faster pages, easier contact.
- If certain pages get lots of visits, make sure those pages guide visitors toward action.
Free tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console give you all of this. They take a little setup, but then quietly show you what is happening.
The point is not to obsess over numbers, but to make decisions based on reality instead of guesses. Even checking these few metrics occasionally tells you whether your website is doing its job and where to put your effort.
