Should Your Small Business Have a Blog?
Is a blog worth it for a small Philippine business? The honest pros, cons, and when it pays off. A guide from GBGCoders.
"Do I need a blog?" is a common question, and the honest answer is: it depends on whether you can keep it useful. A blog can be a powerful, low-cost way to attract customers — or a neglected page that sits empty. Here is how to decide.
What a blog can do for you:
- Bring in search traffic. Each helpful article can rank on Google for questions your customers ask, pulling in people who did not know your business yet.
- Build authority and trust. Useful content shows you know your field, which makes customers more confident choosing you.
- Feed social media and AI. Articles give you things to share, and clear, useful content is increasingly what AI tools cite.
- Answer common questions once. Instead of repeating yourself, point customers to a helpful post.
The catch: a blog only works if it is genuinely useful and reasonably maintained. A blog with two posts from years ago does nothing — and an abandoned one can even make a business look inactive.
You should consider a blog if:
- Your customers search for information related to what you offer (how-tos, tips, comparisons, guides).
- You (or someone) can write useful posts occasionally — not daily, but consistently enough to build a library over time.
- You want long-term, compounding traffic rather than only paid ads.
You can skip it (for now) if:
- You cannot commit to creating genuine content, in which case the effort is better spent elsewhere.
- Your business gets customers fine through other channels and you have no capacity for content.
Quality beats quantity. A handful of genuinely helpful, well-targeted articles outperforms dozens of thin, generic ones — and avoids looking like filler. Write for real people answering real questions, using the words they search.
A practical approach: start with a few solid articles answering your customers' most common questions, then add more over time as you can. Even a small, quality library quietly works for you for years.
A blog is not mandatory — plenty of great businesses skip it — but for those who can sustain it, it is one of the best long-term investments in being found online.
