How to Prepare Your Content Before Building a Website
Website projects stall on missing content. How to prepare your text, photos, and info before building. A practical guide from GBGCoders.
The single most common reason website projects drag on is not design or development — it is waiting for content. Getting your text, photos, and information ready before (or early in) the project keeps everything on track and often saves money. Here is how to prepare.
Gather your core information:
- Business basics — your name, address, phone, email, hours, and service areas, exactly as you want them shown.
- Your services or products — a clear list with descriptions, and prices if you will show them.
- Your story — a few honest notes on who you are, why you started, and what you stand for (for your About page).
- Credentials — licenses, certifications, years in business, notable clients or achievements.
- Testimonials — gather a few genuine reviews or quotes from happy customers.
Prepare your visuals:
- Your logo, in the best quality you have.
- Photos — of your products, work, team, and premises. Real photos beat stock. If you do not have good ones, plan to take or source them.
- Any brand colors or materials you already use.
Write (or draft) your text:
- You do not need it polished — even rough notes on each page's key points help enormously. A good web team can refine wording, but they need your substance.
- Think about what each main page should say and what action you want visitors to take.
Why this matters:
- Projects with content ready move faster and smoother.
- It saves money — endless back-and-forth and stalls cost time (and sometimes fees).
- It produces a better site, because the design is built around real content, not placeholder text that never gets replaced.
A common pitfall is launching with "we'll add that later" placeholders that linger for months, leaving the site half-finished. Preparing content up front avoids that.
If writing or photos feel daunting, that is normal — and a good web partner can help with copywriting and guide your photography, or source suitable images. The key is to start gathering early rather than treating content as an afterthought.
Think of content as the substance of your website; design is how it is presented. The better prepared the substance, the better and faster the result.
